There are several things you can do to choose a good consultant.
1. Identify the things you would like to have a health care consultant's assistance with. What questions do you have?
Write down all of the questions you need answered. This will help you understand what you need while identifying if that need can be met with internal staff versus external.
2. Check out several health care consultants and invite them for an interview. Getting to know the health care consultant before you hire them is a prudent step. Ask them how they have solved a request or met the needs of other clients.
A consultant should be able to answer basic questions about their approach. Compare a few consultants and use a check sheet to identify each strength and weaknesses.
Be open to considering small consulting shops, like Michigan Healthcare Improvement, that have experience and low overhead.
3. Ask for a proposal. Be sure to include start date, progress timelines and includes specific deliverables that must be achieved.
4. If you are leaning toward one consultant, but not totally convinced, you can try them out with a small project or a short term engagement.
